Madhubani

The town that paints its walls

Capital of Mithila painting — the bold, filled-every-inch line art women have painted on mud walls here for centuries. Visit the artist villages of Jitwarpur and Ranti, the painted railway station, and buy directly from the hands that made it.

  • Madhubani railway station — Every wall a mural — the whole platform..

Mithila painting was wall art — done by women for weddings and festivals in the kohbar (bridal) room, with bamboo twigs and cotton swabs dipped in soot, turmeric, indigo and cow-dung wash. It stayed on the walls, unseen outside the region, until the 1934 earthquake cracked houses open and a British officer, William Archer, photographed what was inside. A drought-relief scheme in the 1960s moved it onto paper, and the world found it.

Jitwarpur and Ranti, a few kilometres from town, are the painting villages: whole houses are canvases, and Padma Shri artists — Sita Devi, Mahasundari Devi, Baua Devi, Dulari Devi — came from here. You can walk in, watch, and buy; artists work at home and expect visitors.

Madhubani railway station became famous in 2017 when 200 local artists painted every surface of it in a fortnight; it is now the best free gallery in Bihar. The Mithila Art Institute in town trains the next generation.
