Kusheshwar Asthan

A Shiva temple and a bird wetland in the Kosi backwaters

A Shiva shrine that fills every Shravan and a 30 square kilometre wetland that fills every winter with ducks, geese and storks. Darbhanga district's quietest corner, between the Kamla and the Kosi.

Highlights

  • Kusheshwar Nath temple — Shravan Mondays and Shivaratri; otherwise quiet..
  • Boat trip on the chaur — Hire from the village at dawn, Dec–Feb; bring binoculars..
  • Openbill colonies — Nesting in village trees from July to October..

Kusheshwar Asthan's temple is dedicated to Shiva as Kusheshwar Nath — legend has Rama's son Kusha worshipping here — and it is the biggest Shravan pilgrimage of Mithila, with kanwariyas walking from the Ganga at Simaria. In Chaitra and on Shivaratri the melas spill across the village. The temple is modest; the devotion is not.

The bird sanctuary around it, notified in 1994, is a chaur — the low-lying seasonal lake left by the Kosi's wanderings — that holds water into March. From November it becomes one of north Bihar's best wetlands: bar-headed geese, pintail, garganey, open-billed and black-necked storks, Asian openbill colonies, and sometimes Dalmatian pelicans. The 'floating' approach by country boat from the village in January is the way to see it; there is no infrastructure beyond that.
