Pind Daan at Gaya: how does it work for a first-timer, and is Bodh Gaya involved?

My father wants to do Pind Daan for his parents. Do we go to Gaya or Bodh Gaya? What should we expect?

Gaya, not Bodh Gaya — the rites happen at Vishnupad Temple, on the Phalgu riverbed ghats and at the Akshayavat banyan, all in Gaya town; Bodh Gaya is 12 km away and is the Buddhist site (handy for a hotel, though). Go to the ghats early; the pandas (priests) are organised by family lineage and will have your ancestral records, and fees are negotiable — agree before starting. The Phalgu runs underground most of the year: you dig a hand's depth into the sand for water. Pitru Paksha (September–October) is the great fortnight when a million pilgrims come and the town is full; any other time in October–March is calm. Gaya Junction is on the Delhi–Howrah main line, the airport is 8 km. Buy tilkut on Ramna Road.
