Two days free between Patna and Varanasi. Is Bodh Gaya just for pilgrims or is there enough for a regular traveller?

Absolutely worth it. The Mahabodhi Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most atmospheric places in India at 5 am or dusk — monks from a dozen countries chanting under the Bodhi tree. Then there are the national monasteries (Thai, Bhutanese, Japanese, Tibetan — each built in its own style), the 25 m Great Buddha Statue, Sujata Stupa across the river, and the Dungeshwari caves where the Buddha fasted. Two days is right. Practical: phones aren't allowed inside the Mahabodhi complex (lockers at the gate), shoes off at the outer gate, and the stone gets hot by midday. Gaya Junction is 16 km away on the Delhi–Howrah main line; Gaya airport 12 km.
