Want to see the Ashokan caves. Can I do it by train?

Nearest station is Makhdumpur, 12 km away, on the Patna–Gaya line; Gaya Junction is 35 km. From Gaya or Bodh Gaya most people hire a car — the round trip takes four to five hours including the caves, and they combine easily with Bodh Gaya. From Patna it's about 90 km / 2½ h. Go early (the granite heats up), bring a torch because the caves are unlit, and ask the caretaker to unlock the gated ones for a small tip. Try a single sustained note inside Sudama cave — the echo is the reason to come.
