The legend is a parable of faith against power. A famine struck the kingdom of Hathwa; a low-caste devotee, Rahashu, said the goddess fed his village through the tigers who ploughed his fields. King Manan Singh, incensed, demanded he prove it by summoning her. Rahashu called, and the goddess came from Kamakhya via Kolkata, Patna and Ami — the palace fell, the king died, and Rahashu's head split as she arrived. The temple stands where that happened; a strange tree, whose species no one has quite agreed on, grows in the courtyard and is held to be older than the shrine.
The Thawe Mandir today is a bustling pilgrimage complex that draws from Gopalganj, Siwan and eastern UP; the Chaitra Navratri mela is the big one, and Tuesdays and Saturdays are busy all year. Hathwa, the old Raj capital, and Dr Rajendra Prasad's birthplace at Zeradei (Siwan) can be added for a day of the Gandak plains.
