Where Gandhi's ashes were immersed in 1948. The Ganga aarti here has grown since 2011; country boats take you across to the Diara sandbanks for sunset. Marine Drive (JP Ganga Path) now runs 20 km along the bank.

Fumihiko Maki's corten-and-glass building holds the Didarganj Yakshi, the Mauryan polished-stone figure that is the single most famous object of ancient Indian art, plus Gupta bronzes, a children's gallery and a regional history that is clear and honest. Allow three hours.

Golghar
Granary · 1786 · Gandhi Maidan west
Captain John Garstin's 29-metre beehive, built after the 1770 famine and never properly used because its doors open inward. The 145-step spiral outside gives the best panorama in the city — the Ganga, the Maidan, the old town roofs.

Maner Sharif
Mughal tomb · 30 km · 30 km west on NH-922
Chhoti Dargah, the 1616 tomb of Makhdoom Shah Daulat, is the finest Mughal building in Bihar and the best half-day out of the city; Maner's laddoos are the other reason. See the separate Maner Sharif page.
