Staying at a monastery in Bodh Gaya — how does it work?

Heard you can stay in the monasteries. Do you book ahead? Rules?

Several monasteries run guesthouses — Burmese Vihar, the Bhutanese monastery and Root Institute are the usual ones. Rooms are simple, calm and cheap. In December–January (teaching season) book weeks ahead; otherwise you can often walk in. Expect early-morning bells, no alcohol, and gates that close at night. Also note: phones aren't allowed inside the Mahabodhi complex — there are lockers at the gate — and the stone gets hot by midday, so go early or at dusk.
